The weather was cold, windy but dry at Taverham as we warmed up before our match against Broadland. They took the push back and made good passes as Broadland had experienced players. However, Rosie Baynes, Phoebe Garrard, Daphne Beckett and Sarah Denny fought hard to keep the ball out of our circle. Play was going well and evenly until mistakes were made, Broadland took their chance and scored with a high shot into the net. The next goal came quickly and the third came from a defender’s stick during a short corner. The final goal of the half came from an unmarked player…a goal hanger.
During half time, Tristan Baynes who did the subbing brilliantly, advised us that the youngsters in the team had speed on their side and should use this together with a swift reverse stick move. Well, the second half was certainly a lot better than the first. Jasmine Christopher made some great runs as did Seren Winterbottom, Alice Baynes and Annabelle Barkway who joined us from the Development team. Becky Holledge had a shot on goal, but it flew over the net. We had a few short corners struck by Jo Meyer to Shirley McAllen, but Broadland defenders were quick, and their goalkeeper was good. Lilly Denny made some fine runs. Peg Bridges, goalkeeper, threw herself to the ground to save a goal, and Tilly Collins sprinted up the pitch and smashed the ball home. It was a fantastic end to the match.
