We arrived at ‘Goals’ in Norwich for the first match of the day and it was sunny and warm. Facing into the sun, we took the pushback, and Dragons soon took control of the ball with accurate passing, yet Alison Priest made some great tackles and Isla Broughton raced past Dragon’s midfielders. Our defenders, Sarah Denny, Phoebe Garrard and Daphne Beckett played superbly and goalkeeper, Peg Bridges, kept the score at nil through sheer hard work. Jasmine Christopher came off with a knee injury as did Sarah Denny who needed an ice pack, shortly before half time.
Skipper, Shirley McAllen, advised us the keep our passes short and quick and use the right wing a bit more. So, facing into the shaded goal, our play improved, and we seemed to keep the play in Dragon’s half. Certainly, we were awarded more short corners and Jo Meyer struck the ball to Shirley McAllen who passed it to Darcy Dillon who smashed it home! Our next short corner began in the same way and Shirley McAllen struck the ball hard, but it went airborne into the goal. Soon after, there was a melee in Dragon’s circle and young Becky Holledge seized her chance and pushed the ball home. Dragons took the ball to our circle, but Peg Bridges made a fantastic dive and saved their strike. Lilly Denny sprinted up the pitch with the ball and passed to Becky Holledge who scored again! Amelie Lark battled against Dragon’s forwards on the left wing to reach their circle and Darcy Dillon just, in the nick of time, pushed the ball into the goal as the keeper was diving onto it.
