Our first match of the season was played away on a fine, sunny day. Dragons began the match with a strong pass towards our circle but were stopped in their tracks by great defending from skipper, Rachel Baynes. We played with three forwards at different times, and this worked very well with Lily Denny, Becky Holledge and Bethany Whipps using their speed to intercept any forward passing and taking the ball up to Dragon’s circle. Alison Priest worked hard on the left and Amelia Stott, player of the match, played superbly. Dragons took shots at goal, but Peg Bridges did a fantastic diving save and the ball rolled away.
During half time, Anouska Stott asked us to run into a space to make passing easier. So, the second half began, unfortunately, with a series of five short corners awarded to Dragons. Yet, our amazing defenders, Rosie and Rachel Baynes, Phoebe Garrard and Betthany Whipps kept the ball out of our goal. We needed a short corner. The opportunity came and young Lily Denny struck the feet of a Dragon’s player in their circle…after some encouragement! Joanna Meyer smashed the ball out to Shirley McAllen who struck the ball hard at Dragon’s goal. Unfortunately, the ball was slightly airborne and hit the number one runner on her knees. The umpire halted the match whilst she left the pitch and our, (hoped for) short corner wasn’t awarded. Still, we all enjoyed the game, and everyone played well.
