The 8th team played away at Dereham in the afternoon under grey clouds, but the rain had stopped, and it wasn’t cold. Two players, however, Jenny Meyer (skipper for the 7ths) and Peg Bridges (goalkeeper), had already played a match in the pouring rain and kindly came to help us out. Also, Tilly Collins (development) was playing her debut match with us so with eleven players we started the game…happy days! It soon became clear that Dereham had some strong, experienced players and were soon awarded short corners. They scored from one of these. Our defenders, Tolly, Rosie, Daphne and Phoebe were strong in defence and their passes soon reached our forwards who sprinted away up the pitch, but their efforts were thwarted by Dereham defence. With quick passes, Dereham scored a second goal.
At half time, Anouska explained that we needed to be seen for those early passes and to keep a tight grouping. It worked and in the second half, we had multiple short corners and great passing from Hannah Brown, Jenny Meyer and Sarah Denny up to the forwards. Amelia Stott, Lilly Denny and Tilly Collins made some fine runs up to Dereham’s circle but despite shots on goal we just couldn’t get past the goalkeeper. During a Dereham short corner, Rosie Baynes (Player of the Match) ran out and took a hard hit to her leg, but it didn’t put her off; far from it! Despite our best efforts, Dereham scored again but it was an enjoyable game. Oh, it was pouring with rain too!
