Our home match was played on a cold afternoon but at least it wasn’t frosty. The warm-up was good, Dragons had the push back and we were raring to go. Their passing was accurate and within minutes they were in our circle. Defenders Phoebe Garrard, Sarah Denny and Daphne Beckett worked hard and cleared the ball out to the midfielders and play was even. One mishap in the circle led to a goal and a second goal was scored soon after. However, we were awarded a couple of short corners where Joanna Meyer struck the ball to Shirley McAllen who passed it into the circle to Jasmine Christopher who smashed it into the goal! Another melee in our circle, where the ball hit someone’s foot near the goal, caused a penalty to be awarded. Peg Bridges, goalkeeper was ready, and we all watched and waited…and Peg made a fantastic save!
At half time, Anouska thought our play was a bit rusty and we needed to go for every ball. So, the second half began with Dragons keeping up their accurate passing and they managed to score a couple of goals from short corners despite young Lilly Denny’s fast running as number one. Alison Priest made some fine tackles, and Amelia Stott took the ball through Dragon’s midfielders numerous times. Becky Holledge, out on the right wing, worked hard and young Tilly Collins took the ball into Dragon’s circle and scored a second goal. Dragons didn’t seem to tire and scored another three goals. Despite the score, we enjoyed the game.
