The Magpies 4s were thwarted this week by an organised Broadland 1st team and an outstanding personal performance by an opposition player who was instrumental in all their goals.
An even start to the game, Magpies took an early lead through a fine interception and cross from Angie that found Lexi in front of goal; she calmly slotted it home but Broadland were quick to respond with a penalty corner that just evaded Magpies keeper, Caitlin. Broadland followed this up with a well-worked open play goal before Magpies responded again with a powerful short corner strike from Angie following some strong play down the right from Tegan and Kate.
A period of Broadland dominance unfortunately resulted in the concession of two further goals, one an impressive drag flick, leaving Magpies trailing at half time 4-2.
Magpies regrouped after the break and were the stronger team in the second half, with greater discipline across midfield and defence that frustrated the Broadland forwards whilst strong work rate from Jess, Issy, Minnie and Cara ensured we kept the pressure on the opposition defence with a frustrating number of penalty corners narrowly missing the target.
In spite of the final result, it was a heartening second half with some fine teamwork and positional play. A weak Broadland goal in the last minute was an unfair reflection of the game and the strong performance from our defence of Annabel, Vanessa and GK, Caitlin, who produced some fine saves throughout the match. Particular mention, though, goes to Mel for her superb defensive interceptions that saw her named the well-deserved player of the match.
