Despite having a difficult season, the Women's 7ths went into this game determined, but with some trepidation about playing a much higher team in the league.
The game got off to a smooth start with the ball being passed easily between defence and midfield players. Interceptions from Yarmouth were effortlessly resolved by our defensive quad Annie Lancaster, Rachael Baynes, Rosie Baynes and Phoebe Garrard making critical tackles and clearing the ball out of trouble. Megan Fisher in goal, made some impressive saves, keeping the score 0:0 after a hard fought first half.
After a motivating team talk and some sweet treats for an energy boost, the 7ths team went back out with fighting spirit, which was matched by Yarmouth 1s. Midfielders Katy Cole, Jenny Meyer, Judith Masters and Emma Seggens covered endless ground, moving the ball up to attackers. This resulted in the first short corner of the game for Magpies. Maisy Woolward injected the ball with power and precision, stopped by Jenny Meyer at the top of D, who took a shot at goal and scored the first goal of the game.
With boosted confidence, Magpies continued to battle, however Yarmouth broke through, scoring an equaliser and putting the pressure back on Magpies.
Zara Broadley, Lily Smith, Maisy Woolward and Becky Holledge, worked tirelessly upfront, getting into great positions and tracking back when support was needed to defend.
Unfortunately, in the last few minutes of the game, Yarmouth broke through, scoring two late goals in the game, the last of which was following a short corner as the whistle blew.
Despite the score of 3:1, Ladies 7ths gave a commendable performance with everyone giving 100% and demonstrating determination to the final whistle. A really enjoyable game against Yarmouth 1s, and excellent umpiring from their umpires.
