Our match against Loddon was played at home on a fantastic, sunny morning and it was surprisingly warm. With a squad of 14, Loddon had first push-back and they were strong players with good passes, but our youngsters got stuck in and defenders Becky Holledge, Heather Brand and Phoebe Garrard made short work of sending the ball straight back out to the midfielders and forwards. We were awarded three short corners during the first half taken by Jasmine Christopher, Jo Meyer and received by Shirley McAllen but Loddon defenders were quick to clear the ball out of their circle. At one point, Alice Baynes struck the ball at Loddon’s goal, and it went in but…she was outside the circle!
At half time, skipper Shirley McAllen was pleased with our efforts and Tristan Baynes advised us to keep the width when we had possession of the ball. The second half began with renewed energy, especially from Flora Whiting, voted Player of the Match, who put her all into sprinting to Loddon’s circle. Peg Bridges made two fantastic saves and Alison Priest worked hard in midfield. Lilly Denny was always there when the ball was passed forward and made fast runs. Amelie Lark, Seren Winterbottom and Darcy Dillon showed great hockey skills, and we all enjoyed the match despite the score which remained a draw.
