Magpies travelled to Hertfordshire on Sunday for their 15th match of the Midlands Conference League, fresh off last week’s victory. With confidence high, the team faced third-placed St Albans, knowing the importance of the match in their fight for National League survival.
The team welcomed back captain Giles Flatt and seasoned professional left-back Andrew Bedwell, who made his annual season first cap for the 1st XI.
From the start, Magpies controlled possession and created several promising opportunities. Their efforts paid off when they were awarded a penalty corner. Ben Emms took the flick, hard and low, with the keeper making a good save, and Lawrence Williams was on hand to fire the ball home from the rebound giving magpies an early lead.
With Head Coach Mark Flatman’s defensive instructions ringing in their ears, the team maintained excellent discipline throughout the match, making it difficult for St Albans to break them down. The home side became increasingly frustrated as the game wore on.
Magpies entered the final quarter still leading 1-0, with a strong sense of belief that they could hold onto their advantage. Man of the Match George Prentice continued to shine, impressing both teammates and fans alike with his skill on the ball and his composed distribution from the back.
St Albans pushed relentlessly in the final stages, but Magpies defended resolutely, with high intensity and excellent work-rate. Even goalkeeper, John Livings noted that he wasn’t forced into many saves, as the team did much of the work in front of him.
In the end, the match finished 1-0 to Magpies, securing a crucial three points away from home. The team can be incredibly proud of their disciplined, hardworking performance, which has moved them one step closer to their National League survival.
