After making it 3 wins in the first 3 games of the season Magpies welcomed Peterborough 2s. Although, missing some players Magpies continued to press as a coherent unit. This led to some excellent crisp passing in between the lines, leading to some lengthy possession. However, Peterborough equally matched this and were very well drilled. Neither team could break the other’s structure with the first half ending 0-0.
The second half started similar with Magpies again zipping the ball between each other. However, this time they were able to create chances and win short corners. Even with some solid corner routines Magpies could not break the Peterborough defence. The game continued in this fashion and looked set for a deadlock. On the other hand an ominous sense of a Peterborough late goal was building.
Ten minutes to go this fear was realised. Peterborough after winning a short corner scored at the back post to make it 1-0. Instead of letting their heads drop, Magpies invigorated by going behind began to press with significant energy.
Finally, Magpies got their goal through Leigh Sitch with 5 minutes remaining. Buoyed by this Magpies found another level with their pressing and were soon rewarded with their tenacity. Billy Flatt played the ball through to Josh Means who was wiped out by Peterborough’s goalkeeper. In the dying moments this gave Magpies the chance to win the game through a penalty stroke. Masterfully Magpies kept their composure and stroked it in to take the lead.
