On a bright and sunny afternoon, a new look women's 3rd team gathered hoping to make a positive start to the season. With coach Mark Flatman making a formation change for the season ahead, the young team started the stronger of the two teams and never really looked back.
With co-captain Meg leading from the front on the pitch, and co-captain Frances being vocal from the bench with coach Mark, the team worked hard to put pressure on UEA all over the pitch. The pressure high up the pitch was rewarded with the team winning a few short corners in quick succession. After a couple of these, the team quickly worked out where the space was and after a slip left, Freya scored a rocket on her league debut.
The first half continued with Bea, Freya and Chloe, all new to the team, controlling the middle of the pitch and working well together. Lily, Kit, Darcey & Meg were turning the ball over high up pitch and the team were unlucky not to score another goal before half time. With the defence relatively untroubled the end of the half finished 1-0.
After half time, the team came out with more energy and determined to score more goals. With Meg, Molly & Minnie winning the ball in the wide channels and releasing the forwards, more opportunities soon came. Another cracker of a penalty corner led to Freya's second goal. A quick break led to UEA's only short corner of the game and the defensive unit remained calm and cleared their lines without worry. Mel marshalled the team from the back of the pitch well, and there were limited opportunities for UEA to attack. Magpies continued to press aggressively, and the forwards were rewarded with plenty of goal scoring opportunities. Lily tucked one of these away confidently to take the score to 3-0.
An all round excellent performance from this young squad with 6 players new to the team it looks to be an exciting season ahead.
