An extra late start did not deter the 7th team squad from meeting up on the Ipswich pitch on time and raring to go. And there was also an unforeseen touch of luxury for the spectators who were able to cheer on the Squad from the side of the pitch from the comfort of a garden seat.
From the start it was obvious that Ipswich was a more experienced team with a number of young, fast and skilful players. But it was Magpies who opened the score with a collectors item goal from David. It was difficult to see if it was a shot or a pass but it didn’t matter as the ball easily beat the Ipswich keeper and thumped into the back of the goal.
Unfortunately this seemed to spur on the Ipswich side and within the space of fifteen minutes, they were able to score four goals past a Magpies defence who were wobbling and struggling to contain the pressure.
However, after this onslaught, Miles was able to calm the players and their familiar defensive shape returned to the degree that Ipswich was not able to score again. All the defence really stepped up to the challenge with goalkeeper Noah regularly saving the day.
Magpies never gave up and there were some strong performances from the forwards and midfield who made a number of carefully crafted but unsuccessful attacks on the Ipswich goal. With a little bit of luck it could easily have been a much closer score.
Ignoring the score, Magpies put in a very creditable performance and once again, it was a very exciting game to watch. They are learning the importance of doing the simple things well and that speed is crucial when it comes to passing, marking and decision making. This match was a big stepping stone in the Squad’s development and all the players will have benefited by taking part.
Well done to all the players, especially Edward who changed teams four times before making the 7ths his priority. Our thanks to David, Miles, Richard and Rae for their help and support in ensuring that as the Club’s last men's team, the Squad plays and enjoys their hockey. And finally, thank you to all the supporters who double up as the taxi service and ensure everyone arrives on time.
