An enthusiastic squad of thirteen Magpies took to the pitch against a team from Bury who were also in a confident mood. After a disappointing score last week, this week showed continuity to all parts of the team and a strong sense that a positive result was in the offing.
The game began with both sides making effective attacks and showing some robust defensive play. Suddenly, there was a well intercepted Bury pass by sweeper James, and with no one coming to make a challenge, James soon found himself on the Bury back line. Without a second thought, he propelled the ball across the face of the goal to enable Noah S to slot it home and to put Magpies in the lead.
The rest of the half was very even with Magpies failing to take advantage of a number of well-delivered shots on goal. With a minute to go in the first half, a shot came in from Bury which goalkeeper Noah saved from a prone position. As the defense tried to rescue the shot from the goalkeeper’s body, they caught the stick of a Bury attacker and a penalty flick was awarded.
Last week, Goalkeeper Noah was very unlucky not to save the flick so, with fingers crossed, it was hoped that this week luck would be more kind. But it was not to be. The ball whistled into the top corner of the net as the whistle for half time sounded.
The second half was very strongly contested but the team held resolutely to their much-improved close skills, passing and tactical understanding. And it paid off! A penalty corner was awarded to Magpies and the now established duo of Noah S and David stepped forward to stop and strike. A cracking shot from Noah S hit the backboard with a crunch giving Magpies a well-deserved lead and what eventually became the winning score.
The spectators were well pleased with the result. The team is exciting to watch and all the players work well together and always give their best. Well done boys …. An excellent result!
Our thanks go to David, James and Rae for their on and off pitch support. Our thanks also to all the loyal supporters and to the parents who transport the boys, always manage to find the venue and do so with time to spare
