On a beautiful, sunny day, with spring in the air, Magpies 7 took to the pitch against a Colchester team who were obviously up for a good win. Unfortunately, sweeper James had been dispatched to help with the Junior Development team but fortunately, the 7s were in luck and welcomed the skills and experience of Richard. This was also a first in that it was the first time three members of the same family were representing the team …. giving Nanny a nice pic for the family album.
The first half saw what was often a bruising battle with strong hitting, strong tackling and a strong determination by both teams not to be beaten. Over the season, Magpies have learnt not to be overawed by bigger opposition and all sections of the team held firm showing a mature resolve and keen sense of purpose. So, it was very unlucky when a firmly struck Colchester shot rocketed in past the near post to give the visitors the lead.
Last year, the team would have been devastated but not anymore. Now it is the incentive for the whole team to do it quicker, more accurately with their skilful passing and tight marking. The forwards and midfield were constantly driving into the Colchester circle so it was not surprising to see Harris dribble the ball past two defenders and crack in the equalizer past a stranded keeper.
At the start of the second half there was a definite feeling that the match was there to be won. Much of the play was in the Colchester defensive half but many a Magpies’ shot was either too high, too wide or just straight at the keeper. However, a neat pass to Richard gave him the opportunity to fire off a shot with the ball rattling the backboard. Then David went on one of his runs and having reached the circle he too hit the ball so hard it zoomed past the Colchester keeper who knew little about it until he heard the thud on the backboard. The 3 -1 lead should have made things comfortable for Magpies, but Colchester did not give up. With four minutes to go they mounted a very serious attack and for the first time, they upset what had been a very steady Magpies defence with a well taken goal.
It was definitely a nail-biting time, and everyone was delighted to hear the final whistle. Well done to all the players. Only four games to go and fifth in the league, I’m sure these final matches will be well worth a watch.
Our thanks to David, Richard and Richard for their help and support on the pitch. To Rae for keeping the subs rolling. To the Richard for refreshments. To the umpires who gave their time to help make the game a good spectator sport. And finally, to all the parents and friends for their regular support and appreciation.
